Building sustainable projects today for a greener tomorrow

Sustainability in Action: Our Net Zero Commitment

At Merit, sustainability isn’t just a goal—it’s part of who we are. We’ve pledged to achieve Net Zero by 2040, ten years ahead of the 2050 target, with a focus on real impact rather than box-ticking.

Our approach centres on eliminating fossil fuels, embracing low-carbon design, and creating sustainable buildings that embody our vision for a greener future. By following the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol, we’ve assessed emissions across Scopes 1, 2, and 3. While our innovative offsite manufacturing reduces Scope 1 and 2 emissions, we’re addressing the largest challenge—Scope 3 emissions—with a clear, science-based strategy aligned with the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

We’re not just cutting our own emissions; we’re also helping you achieve your sustainability goals. Together, we can create a better, greener future.

Our Net Zero Commitment

Tackling Scope 1 & 2 emissions

We’re committed to reaching net zero and we're making it happen. Scope 1 includes direct emissions from fuel combustion, while Scope 2 covers indirect emissions from electricity and energy use. Our goal is clear: cut these emissions by at least 4.2% each year.

By 2032, we’re aiming for a 90% reduction. And we’re already on our way – by connecting our facilities to mains power and installing solar panels, we’ve slashed Scope 1 emissions by 65%. These are real actions, driving real change.

Scope 1 & 2 Initiatives

Tackling Scope 3 emissions

Our Scope 3 emissions primarily arise from construction projects and supply chain activities. We are committed to reducing absolute emissions by 2.5% annually, with a key focus on optimising transportation and enhancing supply chain efficiency.

However, our efforts don’t stop there. We are working closely with our supply chain partners to cut emissions further by implementing a policy of local procurement and maximising delivery efficiency through combined shipments, wherever feasible.

Additionally, we have enhanced site-wide waste management by tracking data through the Go-Green waste portal. This enables us to monitor waste recyclability, recovery and landfill diversion rates, which currently average 85% recycling, 13.8% recovery and 1.2% landfill diversion.

Climate change is a global challenge, but we see it as an opportunity for meaningful action. At Merit, our dedication to carbon reduction is more than a legal obligation – it’s a fundamental value, with environmental responsibility woven into every project, decision and action.

Merit's plan for customers

Our roadmap extends beyond internal operations to help you reduce your carbon footprint through sustainable construction.

  • Low-Carbon Building Designs : We deliver buildings that lower embodied carbon and improve energy efficiency. By optimising structural designs, using renewable materials, and integrating renewable energy solutions, we reduce lifecycle emissions.
  • Supporting Your Carbon Goals :We simplify your carbon reporting with detailed life-cycle carbon assessments.
  • Collaborative Decarbonisation: Partnering with suppliers, we promote low-carbon materials and systems to cut emissions in your projects. This includes optimising building services, reducing heating and cooling loads, and using materials with lower global warming potential.

In 2019, we launched our 'Zero Carbon Emissions 2020' strategy, replacing fossil fuels with heat recovery and heat pumps.

Building a sustainable future

Our innovative offsite solutions minimise environmental impact, reduce waste and enhance energy efficiency, ensuring a greener tomorrow for all.

Method

Our offsite platforms are made right here in our state-of-the-art factories by skilled local workers. This not only boosts our community but also slashes the carbon footprint that larger onsite teams usually leave behind.

Energy

Our facilities are entirely fossil-fuel-free, powered instead by advanced heat recovery and heat pump systems - delivering energy-efficient, all-electric buildings that save you money while reducing your carbon footprint.

Cost

By harnessing smart technology - like renewables, heat pumps and heat
recovery systems - Merit can deliver sustainable facilities without adding to your budget. That's sustainability without the price tag.

Waste

By manufacturing in our factories, we cut down the need for onsite contractors, reduce health and safety risks and speed up your project timeline. Our precise material planning minimises waste, reuses offcuts and recycles responsibly.
